Today we were warmly welcomed to the offices of PAEF and learned about the rich history of the Philippines from the incredible Professor John Ray Ramos.

After an overview of the centuries of colonialism and imperialism shaping the Philippines today, we learned about strategies in teaching in the Philippines.

A few Filipino concepts stuck out to me. The first, pangalawang ina/ama, describes the concept of teachers becoming second parents, indicating the deep level of regard held for teachers within Filipino barangays, or communities. The second is pakikipagkapwa, putting relationship and trust building at the highest level of importance for a successful class. And, lastly, pakikisama, the concept of valuing relationships with students and with the broader family and communities. Each of these come together to create successful educational spaces, highlighting the importance of relationship building within our classes. As an educator who focuses on building relationships, I felt affirmed by this experience and look forward to bringing this terminology into my own classroom.

Nichia and I were also able to prepare our California materials for the state fair on Thursday before the group did karaoke with some amazing Fulbright Exchange alum!
